The Rosie Shirt

The Rosie shirt pattern from Sewing Avenue has been designed to incorporate feminine styling for a flattering fit and shape.

The classic shirt is one of the most versatile and practical  wardrobe staples for women. This cross over from mens fashion has found it’s place in most women’s outfits from super casual with denim jeans, an easy slip on cover up for the beach, classy for a lunch date or smart for the professional business office.

I have made the Rosie Shirt pictured here from a quite inexpensive, widely available pink and white Gingham cotton fabric, although lots of woven fabrics would be suitable. The shirt would look beautiful in floaty silk or silky types like viscose or crepe de chine or practical for the warmer seasons made from soft linen or linen blends. For a winter options it would be cosy and warm made from a brushed cotton or a wool blend.

The three quarter length sleeves are finished with a narrow sleeve band to expose the wrists and allow your jewellery or watch to be shown.

The back of the shirt has a small section of gathers creating a little fullness and shape across the upper back to allow for easy movement.

There are two different collar shapes given on this one pattern, creating more options for making your own individual look. There is a traditional pointed collar and a gently rounded option.

I chose the bright pink buttons for the front of the shirt to set off the pink in the check more.

One little tip I have when you are positioning the buttons on the front of a shirt or blouse you are making, is to actually put it on when you mark the position of the buttons and buttonholes so that you get them in the correct place for you. I rarely wear my shirts buttoned up to the top, so think about how you will wear your shirt, and then decide how open you want the neck to be as well. If you place the fastening too high, you might feel choked, or too low, you could feel too exposed, you won’t wear the shirt because you won’t feel comfortable in it.
